If you’ve been missing a significant amount of pastel tulle, red berets, and kaleidoscope patterns in your life, fret not: Emily in Paris season 3 will be available on Netflix on December 21. As shown in the teaser, the upcoming episode of the eagerly awaited series promises more romance, drama, and garish clothing (three words: zebra shoulder pads). However, Lily Collins, who plays the title role, couldn’t be more dissimilar from her character on her recent red carpet attire.
The 33-year-old performer kicked off her press trip with a sensual and understated Saint Laurent dress, complete with cut-outs at the front and gathering at the waist, for the Paris premiere of Emily in Paris season 3. The outfits that followed were a masterclass in the real French-girl look, including a sandy wool Fendi ensemble, a skirt suit by Thom Browne, a tunic and pants set in blue by Delcore, a toile short set by Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, and a button-down shirt by 3.1 Phillip Lim paired with a fringed skirt.
Naturally, there are hints of Emily in Lily Collins. She chose a black Dior tulle dress for her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, evoking this passionate scene from season one. She also wore a bright green suit and corset on December 14 that resembled her now-iconic outfit. I can’t help but feel that the series partly misled us because even these bolder styles have an aura of elegance that the show never quite manages to achieve.
The French-girl look is subtle, as TikTok will attest. It’s simple, a little disorganised, and mainly neutral. If you’ve seen Emily in Paris for even a brief period, you’ll realise that none of these characteristics apply to the costumes; they are the Disney Channel’s interpretation of Parisian style. Is Collins making a message by appearing so un-Emily? Is she consciously distinguising her personal style from that of her persona? She might well be, but for whatever reason, we want more!
